Although an exception in the past, the number of PhD candidates has been growing steadily in the last years. At Darmstadt University, there are no set courses for guiding a PhD project, but applicants are supposed to proof their capacity of organizing independent scientific research on their own. Preparation is offered, however, in the urban-studies MSc programme and after its successful completion students should be in the position to complete their PhD in one extra year.

PhD are supposed to meet their supervisor in regular intervals to discuss progress, but they are not requested to work and live in Darmstadt. To assist in focussing the research question, to choose the right methodology and to prevent unnecessary side steps in completing the PhD thesis, an intensive two-day research seminar is being organized for PhD students once every term.
